Match Report:
Another cracking day for football out at Marcellin on the weekend. Despite some confusion (possibly mind games) on whether we would be playing on the top oval or the second oval, the game plan did not change. We needed to come out switched on from the start, be clean in the contest and use our first option.
We started well enough, although some inaccurate kicking from the opposition flattered the quarter time lead. The guys were enjoying the space of the large ground and were moving the ball well. The ruckman were getting first use of the footy but clearances were about even which needed to be addressed at quarter time.
The quarter time break seemed to provide the reset needed. Clearance work was cleaned up and the pressure across the ground lifted enormously. This created plenty of opportunity for the backline to pick off forward entries and initiate from their run and rebound. Lachy Holmes’ kicking efficiency was as always in the high 90’s and the team first mindset of Ando and Clarky was very pleasing for the coaching staff. Bosley was playing his wing well and led the way in terms of setting up around the ball.
Sam Wood and Damo Simic were proving to be a handful in the forward line. Damo’s play to use the first option and bring others into the play was equally as impressive as his haul of goals. James Small was also enjoying some time through the midfield and was winning clearances as well as his own ball forward of centre to register a couple of goals next to his name. At the half time break, we had extended our lead to 8 goals with a great team performance.
The message at half time was not to go away from the things that set up that quarter. The set-up around the ball and hardness at the contest was giving us first use. The give to the first option was bringing team mates into play and encouraging the run, and finally the blocks and movement was giving us time and space to use the ball.
The boys did what the coaches had asked. A 4 goals to 2 quarter was not as dominant as the second term, but we had the lion’s share of the play and the opposition were beginning to tire after chasing a lot of tail. This was evident in the final term when we broke their back and kicked 6 goals to nothing in the final term. Again, it was pleasing to see the team continue to play their role and not get too hungry kick chasing or trying to get a cheap goal.
We now sit 2-1 and second on the ladder. This week we play Old Camberwell at Glenhuntly who are also coming off a solid win. A few extra players back through both teams will make selection difficult which is where we want to be.
Go Fields.
