A late change of venue, 11 different players from the Rd 1 victory, saw Caulfield Grammarians Thirds go into the game quietly optimistic for the match against Marcellin.
Caulfield started the game strongly through good centre clearance work from Tom Stephenson to set up Kossie who kicked the first goal of the match. Marcellin then answered back to kick the next 2 to take back & maintain the lead.
Caulfield however continued to pepper the goals but only managed to convert one out of 8 shots on goal, which should have seen them go into quarter time a lot closer, but bad kicking is bad footy so it saw them go into the first break 22 points down
The second quarter saw Caulfield work extremely hard to win the contested ball. Continuing on from last week’s form,
Sam McDonald was giving his onballers first use of the footy through great ruck work, which first gamer Cal Hogan & Brad Chilko capitalised on in providing the forwards with plenty of scoring opportunities. But once again Caulfield’s forwards found it difficult to convert their chances in only kicking 2 goals from 7 shots to go to the main change 5 goals down.
The second half was relatively even as Caulfield continued to run hard to try and address the lead but the early damage had been done as Marcellin ran out eventual 36 point victors.
Better players for Caulfield were Tom Stephenson, who tried hard all day, first gamer Cal Hogan got plenty of the footy, 3 goals from Kosmo who looked dangerous up forward & Nick O’Connor & Max Judd who both played solid footy for the day.
Special mention to the 3 U19 boys who stepped up after missing out on selection, all 3 in Tom Collins, Tom Sherman & particularly Will Smith acquitted themselves really well & did their chances of getting back into the U19 side for Round 4 no harm.
Round 3 sees the boys travel to Kew for an early 9.20 start & with some likely inclusions will hopefully see the boys get back on the winners list.
