With some inspirational words of advice from Luke Matias, a full complement of players & a few off-field helpers, Caulfield Grammarians Thirds were eagerly awaiting their First Round match v local rivals Ormond.
In a tough evenly fought first quarter both sides were hard at the footy, which resulted in no easy contest all over the ground. As the siren sounded both sides went into the main break one goal apiece.
The second quarter saw Caulfield work extremely hard to win the contested ball. Sam McDonald was giving his onballers first use of the footy through great ruck work, which first gamer Jack Massie & skipper Damien Hay capitalised on in providing their forwards with plenty of scoring opportunities. The forwards led by the evergreen Andrew Strain & Nick O’Connor converted well as Caulfield kicked 5 majors whilst restricting Ormond to 2 goals for the quarter, to open up a handy 17 point buffer going into the long break.
During his debut half time address Luke Matias stressed the importance of working hard to maintain the lead & getting first use of the footy. This resulted in an immediate response from the players’ as they posted the first third quarter goal. Caulfield’s defence was also standing up to Ormond’s push into their attack, through great rebounding footy from Lachie Holmes & Tom Stephenson. Caulfield outscored Ormond once again for the third term to go into the final change 27 points up.
Caulfield knew that they would have to run out the game to maintain the lead & that the start of the quarter would be vitally important. Caulfield started the quarter the better to propel the ball forward & managed to maintain possession to run soak up valuable minutes on the clock whilst not allowing Ormond any free space. The quarter saw both teams score 2 goals each but the early hard work from Caulfield paid off as they ran out comfortable 4 goal victors.
Encouraging signs for the club in coming weeks with a number of players missing the 1’s & 2’s through injury all gels well for upcoming matches, as players will need to maintain form to keep their spot in their respective sides.
