Despite Richard Harris' best efforts he couldn't convince Chris Judd to make his debut for the Dirty Thirds. Luckily Nick Gould (fresh off the plane) had no such reservations and he along with Matty Linklater and Tom Stephenson helped cover our "Splendour in the Grass" outs. Kew had run Marcellin pretty close last week and as such the Thirds weren't taking the Bears lightly. However with the loss of all our tall forwards we had to improvise with Kedders at CHF and Matt Wood out of the square. Well the big truck took to the role like a natural and started the game with 2 goals in the first quarter. He led (& turned) like a freight train and had we delivered the ball a bit better he could have snagged a few more. The boys down back did a great job with Mollard & Eke making any Kew forward entry a turnover situation. By the first break we had a handy 4 goal lead, but were kicking into the breeze in the second. The coach lectured the boys on how to play into the breeze and how we wanted to kick 2 goals for the quarter. Well the lads made a mockery of this and piled on 5 goals including 2 Chilko torpedo specials. By the main break the game was over with the lead extended to 10 goals.
While things were looking good we had lost Bockman (back) and Stephenson (cork) and desperately needed the arrival of veteran goal sneak Josh McCahon, fresh from coaching the Unders at Glenhuntly. Well J Mac turned it on in the third quarter with handballs to himself and other assorted party tricks, including a well taken goal. Inspired by J Mac, the pattern of the game remained as the boys ran Kew off their feet and used the ball well through the corridor. A comfortable 15 goal lead at the last change allowed us to throw Tim Mollard forward and like he did some weeks back took his opportunity with another goal. A second J Mac goal, to cap off his 100th game, followed and despite some junk time goals by Kew the Dirty Thirds ran out 103 point winners. This game also saw 2 season firsts with more goals than behinds and also a full compliment of support. Thanks to Smitty for running the boundary, club treasurer Tonners for running water, Colin Bockman for again doing the goals and of course the most groomed runner in the VAFA "Golden" Luke Matias.
