The Dirty Thirds took on Ormond at EE Gunn with a win guaranteeing them a spot in the finals for this season. The usual merry go round at selection saw a number of players head off on holidays, a few come back and a surprise cameo from Max Slonim. However we had 22 in total and despite some players finding the trip from Toorak to Ormond challenging, we had them all there for a warm up.
The first quarter saw Ormond really take it up the lads with a flooding defence and strong transition play that saw the home side kick 2 unanswered goals. We had a majority of possession, but didn't do a lot with it and wasted plenty of forward entries. It was tough at the breakdown of play as Ormond fought hard and tackled very well. At the first break we trailed by those few goals and had a real battle on our hands. The discussion at quarter time focussed on having to play smarter football and lowering our eyes going forward.
The second quarter started brightly with a roving Nick Karoly goal. We then proceeded to dominate the quarter kicking another 7 straight goals, with the best being twinkle toes Dan Grey's turn and burn effort. At the main break we had grabbed a 40 point lead.
The coach's trip to Officeworks pre game had delivered a value pack of Allen's snakes and this extra energy at half time must have helped as the lads continued on their merry way in the third quarter. 4 more goals through Kingwill, Gray, Anderson and Richards pushed the lead out and our defence (which was largely only Tim Mollard by this stage) kept Ormond scoreless. The only concern was that the supply of snakes was running out and Schwarer had managed to sustain a blood nose by spending too much time in the forward line.
A 68 point lead at the last change was more than comfortable. This comfort factor, along with the snakes running out, led to a poor last quarter. We did waste some opportunities and continued our perfect record of kicking more points than goals in every game this year. Ormond were plucky and managed to kick 3 goals to earn a respectable 53 point loss.
