Saturday was a great morning for footy and the Caulfield women were all excited to test themselves in their first Premier game against Melbourne University. Fields had the first score after a quick forward 50 entry; with Millie Klingbeil kicking a point. Melbourne used the wind to their advantage and rebounded well, snapping a goal from 10m directly in front. Amy looked to regain the lead for the Fields with a great forward 50 tackle, the kick on goal just falling short.
The energy was high heading into the second quarter with Caulfield hoping to make the most of their turn at the favoured end. Within two minutes Julia Cowell kicked an inspired goal to bring the Fields to within a point of their opposition. Much of the second term was spent locked in Caulfield’s forward half and the Fields entered the main break with a four-point lead after keeping Melbourne scoreless.
Melbourne Uni had first hands on the ball in the second half with an excellent centre clearance but the Fields defence held up. Kat Ellis was sound at full back and drove the ball back into the midfield with some precise kicking. The Fields produced an excellent passage of play, taking four uncontested marks as they worked their way deep into attack. With the wind in Melbourne’s favour the scores were level at the end of the third quarter. The game was set up for a brilliant finish.
The story of the last stanza was the Fields forward pressure and their ability to lock it in their attacking 50. A great zone set up behind the play allowed Jess Mulquiney to continue to pump the ball into the Fields hot spot. After some great individual and team efforts Caulfield continued to score but struggled to find the middle of the goals. The Fields’ women remain undefeated as they took out the contest 1-13-19 to 1-6-12. A great effort from the entire team.
