The Fields featured heavily in the VAFA Best & Fairest awards held this week. Congratulations to Under 19’s skipper Charlie Ingham who has won the 2019 U/19 Premier Division Best & Fairest! Also congrats to Irena Malliaras and Will Edwards for placing second and third respectively in last night’s VAFA HQ League Best & Fairest Awards.
Charlie "Chinga" Ingham
Chinga had an outstanding year leading our Under 19s this year and the term ‘best and fairest’ suits him perfectly.
He has played at a consistently high level throughout the season and is a very popular teammate and clubman.
This award is a significant achievement considering the high standard of the Premier U/19 competition.
Coach Patrick Kennedy spoke glowingly of his skipper after last night’s vote count,
“Ching is incredibly hard working and dedicated to improving his footy. Not only was he an outstanding leader of the Unders this year, his onfield performance was very consistent. Well done mate.”
Upon receiving the award Charlie spoke of his appreciation for the club,
“I felt honoured this year to represent the Caulfield Grammarians in the Under 19’s Premier Division. Alongside many great teammates I was lucky enough to win the league B&F, of which I am proud of. I send my thanks to both our coach Patrick Kennedy and the Fields as a whole for their immense support this season. Now I’m looking forward to the upcoming finals series for our senior teams. Go Fields!”
Well done Charlie from everyone at CGFC.
Irena "Renes" Malliaris
CGFCW superstar Irena Malliaras has placed second in the Premier B 2019 Best and Fairest.
Her work has limited her ability this year to commit to the heavy VFLW training schedule which has meant she was able to play just 8 of our 14 games but polled 13 votes to finish equal-second, one vote behind the winner.
One of our CGFCW founding players, Irena - otherwise known as “Renes" or "The Queen" (courtesy of Guy Nelson) - played soccer while attending CGS but was one of the first players to join the club when pre-season started in late 2016 and since then she has played 28 games for the club and has represented the VAFA twice, winning best on ground honours in the Big V’s first ever women’s representative match in 2017.
She is a listed VFLW player with Essendon having played 10 games over the past two seasons.
Irena is a dynamic midfielder with a lethal left and right foot kick. She is lightning quick, reads the play magnificently, possesses superb balance and eludes opponents on her way to kicking goals.
Congratulations Renes on another fine year of footy. All at CGFC are very proud of you.
Will "Edo" Edwards
Fields’ midfield marvel Will Edwards has placed third in this year’s Premier B Best & Fairest count.
Will’s return to the club for the 2019 season has been outstanding, named in the best players on nine occasions this year including three best-on-ground performances.
Anyone who has seen Will play this year would have observed his sheer class; his consistency by foot on both sides, his composure and awareness through traffic and his inspirational determination and persistence to win the ball and to win games.
Will’s trademark midfield extractions amidst heavy physical congestion have put many smiles on Fields fans’ faces throughout the 2019 season.
This time last year he placed third in the EFL Division Two League Best & Fairest for Wantirna South and this year it’s third place in the Premier B B&F.
