As most of you will know by now, the VAFA season has been cancelled across all levels for 2020 – what started out with much optimism has finished off as a whimper.
The last hope that we would of been to play a shortened, but meaningful season, has been crushed over the recent weeks by the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Victoria and a return to lockdown in Melbourne. The VAFA had done everything it could to ensure we had a chance at playing. When other community leagues cancelled their seasons last month, the VAFA Board kept planning for a start, working hard in the hope that the public health situation would allow a late commencement.
Throughout extremely challenging times for our community, the playing group continued to train with energy and purpose, hoping that the season would get underway at some stage. I want to thank all of our Coaches, players, conditioning staff and trainers for their effort - at least we kept fit and had the chance to connect with each other and have a bit of fun. The social connection, even in the smaller groups, cannot be underestimated. With everything now in recess under Lockdown 2.0, our next focus will be on the 2021 pre-season, and what needs to be done to prepare for our (belated) Centenary Year.
You will hear more about the functions planned, dates, etc in due course – let’s hope the virus is under control by then and some sense of normality has returned. We look forward to the time where we can finally celebrate the Centenary of our great club.
Even in circumstances like this, the Club expends money in the pre season and in preparation for the year ahead – we could not have done this without the fantastic Partners and Sponsors of CGFC who have been with us every step of the way. To our members thanks for sticking by us and to our volunteers, players, coaches and supporters, thank you. A very big thank you for your continued support – we would not be where we are without you. Please utilise their services when you can to show your support! To our members thanks for sticking by us and to our volunteers, players, coaches and supporters, thank you.
Our social media coverage has again this year proven to be a great way to keep connected to the Club. Tommy, Seb and Charlie with their Podcasts – haven’t they been fun! And to see the CGS Alumni as guest speakers – what talent we have in our midst. There is more to come so please continue to watch and give feedback- and connect in to the website and social media channels for more information.
I am also delighted to announce that our Coaching group for 2021 has already started to take shape. One of the hallmarks of our recent history has been our consistency on and off field – it brings confidence to those around us and certainty for the playing group as to our direction.
On this, the following re-appointments have been made for 2021’
Simon Williams ; Senior Men’s Coach
Mitch Dupljanin ; Senior Women’s Coach
Marcel Bruin ; Senior Assistant Men’s Coach
Seb Gotch ; Reserves Men’s Coach
Patrick Kennedy ; Under 19’s Coach
Jeff Scotland ; Football Operations / Chairman of Selectors
A big thank you goes to our Co-Patrons, Stephen and Ashleigh, for their continued guidance, as well as to our Committee, who work hard all year round to ensure the Club runs smoothly.
We will bring everyone more information as it comes to us but for now, please follow the rules, look after each other and stay safe.
