| Under 19s Round 9 v. Old Brighton |
|
Round nine saw the U19's greet our most fiercest of rivals, Old Brighton, to Glen Huntly oval. After a disappointing last few weeks, hopes were high for a turn-around in form with the inclusions of Linklater and Elkington, however Small was a late withdrawal with the flu, and Parsons continued to impress in the seniors.
The first quarter saw Brighton win the toss and use a slight breeze to their advantage to kick the first goal of the game, however Kremmer quickly marked and goaled to erase that advantage. Brighton then kicked away to a 5 goal to 1 lead. Grossy began to swing some changes from then on, including the return of Matt Linklater from injury , who quickly made up for lost time by kicking 2 vital goals to keep to contest well and truly alive. Trailing 6.4 to 3.1 at quarter time. The second quarter saw the intensity rise as Caulfield began to gain the ascendancy out of the midfield with Keane and Allanson giving the midfielders first use of the ball, particularly Morley who continued to get the ball moving Caulfield's way from the centre clearances. However, despite the early dominance the young Fielder's did not capitalise on their chances, only managing to kick 1.4 for the quarter. Brighton however fully took advantage of a few brain-fades late in the quarter to kick 4 goals straight to take in a commanding and flattering lead into half-time. Brighton 10.4, Caulfield 4.5. Despite a half-time rev up from Grossy, we failed to deliver in the third-quarter as our heads dropped from the 2nd quarter failure, as Brighton kicked away to little resistance. Baker and Linklater continued to try hard on the wings, whilst Lewis, Morley and Spanos battled hard in the midfield. Highlight of the quarter must be noted as Vice-Captain Woody Eke’s incredible one handed juggling mark which stunned onlookers. The three-quarter time margin was stretched to 62 points by Brighton, 16.8 to 6.6. In the final quarter the spark had all but left the contest and Brighton continued to exert its dominance with a 5 goal to 1 quarter, to run out convincing 87 point victors. Hoever, our one goal for the quarter by Dean ‘DJ’ Spanos was another one of his monster goals, this time only a lazy one-step 55m bomb. Despite the great goal, this did little to help the sour loss to our bitter rivals. This week we have the week off to re-group, as the previously scheduled match against Oakleigh is deemed a walkover. Much soul-searching must be done in this period before we meet Mazenod at home in two weeks time.
