The Caulfield Grammarians’ Football Club (originally called the Old Caulfield Grammarians’) came into being in 1920 when a group of old boys decided that they would enter a team in the Metropolitan (later Victorian) Amateur Football Association’s competition, which was being resumed after the First World War. Eight teams entered in 1920: Collegians, South Yarra, University and Elsternwick which had played in the MAFA before and four newcomers: Old Melburnians, Melbourne Swimming Club, Teachers’ College and Caulfield Grammarians. For a number of years, a match between teams of past and present students had been a regular feature of Caulfield Grammar’s football calendar and there are reports of these encounters as early as 1889, when The Cricket (Caulfield’s first "magazine") described the action in a match played on the "Coast" Ground. In 1904, an old boys team known as Caulfield Collegians had entered in a weekly competition run by "Colleges Football Association", winning the inaugural premiership over Old Melburnians, Sherwood Collegians, University and Scotch Collegians. Nevertheless, as this Association seems to have had only a brief history, it was not until after the First World War that a Grammarians team was finally established on a permanent basis.
At a meeting held in early March, 1920, it was decided to enter the Old Caulfield Grammarians Football Club in the Metropolitan Amateur Association. The Headmaster William Buntine was elected to the position of President, and generously placed the school facilities at the disposal of the Old Boys. Mr William Simpson was appointed honorary secretary. Early in their debut season it was feared that there would be difficulty in getting together a team fit to compete in Metropolitan football. However, old school players gradually rallied round the club and the initial CGFC list included the following players:
J.W.Robinson E.Kohn L.Harbord A.Donaldson R.Powers A.Drew A.Chaffey C.Masterson E.Howell R.Ballard J.Howell C.Simpson A.Meyer C.Campbell K.Gardiner H.Langley L.Harbeck R.Nankivell F.Parfitt D.Scars M.Buntine D.Hardy C.Jones R.Tucker B.Pie A.Buntine
John Robinson was appointed the club’s first Captain and Len Harbord was his deputy. The season was opened on May 15, when Caulfield played Collegians on the Wesley Oval. A very heavy wind spoiled the game to a great extent, and the Collegians, using their superior weight to advantage, managed to scramble home by the narrow margin of three points, 7.11.53 to 6.14.50.
