Reserves Semi Final v. Beaumaris PDF Print E-mail
Finals football in Caulfield for the first time since 2005 and the feeling at the club was extraordinary.  Although spirits were dented somewhat after a disappointing showing by the senior side, we could not underestimate how big the Reserves game was not just for the team itself, but indeed the entire club.  Expectations were matched by Bombay naming a very strong side.  It was a case of the Breen rising to the top with Tom being elevated to the seniors and while there were a few boys who were very unlucky to miss out on playing, we were more than happy to welcome Richard Foote, Chris Axias, Dean Spanos et al. to the team to face Beaumaris.  It was also exciting earlier in the week to welcome Hammo and Fagan to Facebook.  We looked much stronger on paper than the side who lost to Beauy just two weeks earlier but knew that the game is not played on paper.  But if you were playing a game of Paddocks the game would very much be played on paper, ironic isn't it?

Seniors Semi Final v. MHSOB PDF Print E-mail
The Junction Oval was in excellent condition even though some heavy rain occurred during the Reserves game and providing players could keep the ball in line with their bodies we anticipated good footy and a real opportunity to take a direct path to the Grand Final.

Seniors Round 18 v Bulleen Temp PDF Print E-mail
Over many seasons round 18 has often presented apathetic response by players, coaches and supporters, depending of course upon the circumstances of a senior team position. It can be purely going through the motions if, a team is sitting securely from 5th to 8th with neither finals nor change of section beckoning or in the case of unavoidable relegation, maybe some fond farewells to pending retirees, and, everyone wants to see them go out feeling good. Fortunately over the years I have been part of match committees, as coach or assistant, when my club more often than not has been entering the finals’ preparation stage rather than facing the dreaded R situation. Many times my disquiet in round 18 has been directed toward surviving the final home and away games without counting up the number of injuries sustained. Last weekend I drove to the Ted Ajani Reserve with some trepidation but expecting to win and even prepared to pay respect to an opposition player that I have had a bit to do with over the journey. The hard, barren state of the ground was not unexpected and hopefully would not result in bruising or cuts and grazes that may sideline any of our boys, senior or reserves. Frankly, what I did expect was a strong win by both seniors and reserves given we had seemingly strengthened both teams with inclusions and apprehension would hopefully be in the hands of the football gods in whom I trusted!

Reserves Round 17 v. Beaumaris PDF Print E-mail
Despite cold and blustery conditions, board shorts were the order of the day as Beaumaris were welcomed to Pressure Park for the penultimate regular season match of 2009.  Having played some of our best footy against the Beach Boys in our first match up of the year, we were keen to impress once more.  We took our place in the coaches' room for our usual pre match briefing and were greeted with 47 different forward set ups, all of which featured Clarkey as the focus.  We weren't all that surprised to learn Clarkey himself had devised the plans and given each of them a name.  Some personal favourite included "Clarke's Arc", "Boofa's Box" and of course the previously successful "Myspace".

Seniors Round 17 v. Beaumaris PDF Print E-mail
The return game against Beaumaris was always destined to be a tough, tight contest. The rivalry between the two clubs, Beaumaris’ opportunity to gain the double chance and our desire to maintain momentum all contributed to the occasion. A really good crowd was in attendance and the luncheon - standing room only; maybe the windy conditions forced a few more inside for a couple of hours?

Club 18 Semi Final v. Old Scotch PDF Print E-mail
After 15 rounds the boys were fired up for their first final v Old Scotch. Even though the game was to begin before the sun was to come up properly the boys were very eager to get into finals football. After splitting the two games with Old Scotch throughout the year, the boys were confident they could reverse the previous week’s loss.

Reserves Round 16 v. Old Geelong PDF Print E-mail
A number of casualties from last weeks encounter with Mazenod left the Reserves somewhat undermanned against an inconsistent Old Geelong.  Jason May got the call up to the Port Adelaide side to replace his look-alike Jacob Surjan while Towny missed through suspension and was spotted working on his right hand jab in preparation for his forthcoming bout with Blair Hall.  We also lost Tom Spinks, Ed Kalaja and Brett Scott to injury, Josh Pitts, and Tim Gerrand who was in Tasmania to allegedly marry his cousin. On the other side of the ledger, Luke Spinks was back from a strained relationship and keen to put his Carmichael Hunt kicking technique to good use.  The big selection news however was Aiden Clarke named at full foward and do you think he was pretty happy about that...

Seniors Round 16 v. Old Geelong PDF Print E-mail
Returning to our well grassed home ground we encountered fine weather and a mere  zephyr of a breeze in place of the gusterly winds of the previous weeks. With three changes we again took the opportunity to challenge players coming up from the Reserves’ to stake a claim whilst they could.
