When you go into a match against the top of the table, undefeated Old Melburnians without Seirakowski, Poulter, Pitts, Cavanagh, Gard, Brown, and both Saunders brothers what hope would you give yourselves? No hope according to Norm Nugent, but he hasn’t met the 2009 version of the Caulfield Grammarians Club XVIII’s.
With a re-shuffled forward and backline the boys went into the match with the attitude that they had nothing to lose. After losing the toss we kicked into a strong breeze in the first quarter. After a stalemate in the first five or so minutes the match was turned onto its head when Brownies boy Judson kicked the goal of the year hard up against the boundary, and set the scene for the day that anything was possible. Fighting hard into the breeze the boys only trailed by 1 goal at the first break, and were up and about at the change of ends. With the breeze the boys were asked to be more direct especially with Superman at centre half forward. With big Lethal carrying the ruck all day by himself he did a mountain of work in giving Farms, Cunliffe and Crathern the first use at the clearances. Rhyno more than held his own at centre half back against an opponent a foot taller than himself. Juddy was again dangerous up forward and at the main break we led by a goal. At half time the group spoke at length about how the third quarter was the key. If we could limit their opportunities up forward then with the breeze in the last quarter we should be able to run over the top of them. Easier said then done. After kicking the first goal of the quarter, Old Melbourne proceeded to kick the next 4 goals 4. With superman at half back, it seemed as though their big number 21 had some kryptonite as the big fella had given his all and was out on his feet. We looked a little flat footed all quarter and at the last change we trailed by 16 points, yet the panic button wasn’t about to be hit. Everyone was aware that if we were to cause a huge upset then everyone would have to leave everything out on the field. After escaping the shackles of the kryptonite wielding number 21, Superman returned to centre half forward and provided a key target yet with all the possession we couldn’t seem to capitalise with the first 10 or so minutes only yielding us1 goal, 4 behinds. The backmen did a great job in repelling all of Old Melbourne’s advances. Superman was then moved onto to ball and duly delivered with a 60 metre goal that had us all tied up with only minutes left. Another quick centre clearance had the ball in our forward line, which they rebounded and we sent straight back in where Juddy dodged what seemed 6 opponents to kick a behind with only a minute or so left. Again or defensive pressure allowed to turn over their resultant kick in which we turned into another behind. Another turnover by Old Melbourne resulted in a goal which was just reward for the boys. The ball barely was thrown up again by the time the siren sounded with us 8 points in front. A deserved reward for all the boys for their perseverance and dogged never give up attitude. There was not one passenger amongst the playing, and there is truly now a growing belief that we can match it with the best. Best (no order); King, Cunliffe, Vanderkruk, Chapple, Babarczy, Judson |
