With only 3 games remaining in the season the boys knew that only one more win would guarantee a finals spot, and this was the driving factor as we turned up to play Old Geelong who had previously touched us up by 15 goals. On a sunny yet windy day the boys arrived pumped up at Como Park with only one thing on their minds, and that was to walk away with the win.
With regular forwards Poulter and Seira away, superman or as hes more renowned, Grant Vanderkruk, moved into centre half forward and showed that with him being the lead up target and Scott Saunders playing deep, we have a really potent forward line. The first quarter was a little flat when it came to scoreboard pressure, but our pressure around the ground was encouraging with the boys laying 32 tackles in the first quarter alone. At quarter time it was put to the boys that on such a big ground that if they were willing to work hard then theyd be rewarded. This hard work was typified by Babarczy who worked tirelessly out on a wing all day. It was great to see our half backs and midfielders work hard and link up with some run and carry football and at the half we held a comfortable lead. The third quarter was by far our best quarter of footy. The guys willingness to run, and do the team first things allowed us to pile on 8 goals. In even more encouraging signs it was great to see Gard and Dolley working so well in the ruck, whilst the midfield is being led by Cunliffe, with new addition Judson showing some mongrel in at the clearances. With a healthy lead at the final break the boys were implored to keep their foot on the throat as we looked to gain some much valuable percentage. Some positional changes were made which allowed our version of the Krakouer brothers in the Saunders brothers to weave their magic up forward. When the final siren sounded we had erased our previous thumping from Old Geelong with an 18 goal win. The only down side being a potential season ending injury to Browny, and a groin strain to Cav. With only two rounds left we are guaranteed of finals, with two decent matches still to play. This week well get our chance to see how we match up against competition leaders Old Melbourne at home whilst the final week will pit us against our first round finals opponent in Old Scotch. So we should be primed come finals time! Congratulations to the boys for securing a finals place after a wooden spoon finish last year, a phenomenal turnaround!
