After such a disappointing capitulation to Old Melbournians and the week off, you would have expected the Caulfield Reserves to come out strongly against Old Essendon.

The enigmatic ‘Bustling’ Blair Hall was playing his 100th game and the skipper finally won a toss and kicked with the wind. However the Bombers had the better of the early play, despite the significant pressure applied by the Fields. Caulfield responded late in the quarter with good goals to Cannell and Beveridge, and went into the first break with the narrowest of leads.

The second quarter was not too different from the first with the game being a tightly fought affair. Picking was doing well in the middle and as a whole the side moved the ball into the wind well, by chipping it around until space was available to run into. Edwards was providing plenty of spark on his wing. However the last 5 minutes of the quarter saw the Fields drop off their effort and discipline, which allowed the Bombers to bang on 3 quick goals and take a 20 point lead into half time.

After half time the Fields came out determined to narrow the gap and despite their best efforts saw the Old Essendon lead stretch out by a further goal. Comeback King Clint McGrath stepped up, providing some important run off half back, while Picking and Beveridge continued their drive out of the middle. The last quarter saw the Fields refuse to give the game away and after 2 quick goals in a row, the margin was reduced to 3 goals. The Bombers steadied and maintained their 4 goal lead till the end. Another loss by not a large margin and it seems that lapses of focus and effort are what is letting the Reserves down. Next week brings the only side the Field’s have beaten this year in Old Haileybury.
