Caulfield Grammarians were a dominant force as the U19s thrashed an inexperienced Old Mentonians at our home ground, with Caulfield amassing a total of 30.16-196 to 4.9-33. Although we weren’t able to see Arch and Stevo run out and play for Caulfield Seniors at The Junction, this team effort was just as good!

The loss against Ormond last week was still very fresh on our minds and after running out onto the field our intention had not changed despite facing a very young Old Mentonians side. This was a game that could insure we keep our third placing on the ladder for when we meet the top team Old Melbournians in a few games, and we certainly helped towards that by gaining some handy percentage.

This game would also see the debut of newly recruits David Hyman and Clay ‘S.O.W’ Johnston (both are yet to play in Nth Melbourne premierships). Johnston was sensational in helping create play in the centre of the ground and up forward gathering a large number of touches (including two goals), while Hyman provided strength to the make-up of our defence and was handy in his first game back after a serious shoulder injury. It was from the first bounce that our midfielders stamped their duty on the game and to the opposition. They were working tirelessly to deliver to the forwards and won most of the clearances at every stoppage. Despite a couple of errors that led to Old Mentonians having scoring shots, the line of defence had only conceded two goals in the first quarter and two goals in the third quarter.

Meanwhile the forwards were responding with goal after goal and from one spearhead in particular, Paul McGlashan. His seven goals in the first half included passages of teamwork that would please any coach. Many of his early goals were snap shots early but his sticky hands were seeing plenty of the ball in the air by his strong marking and was just as good at ground level. He set up many other scoring shots by passing to running players. In a match where it is difficult to pick out individual players it was good to see Max Price, Jimmy Elrington, Jake McCahon and Luke Spinks adding goals to the scoreboard, while the run of Ford, B Price, Tamblyn, Eke, Johnston, Nelson and Baker was of a class of its own. O’Keefe showed he may not just be a fill in forward after leading and presenting in fine style, while Dave Allanson and Justin Kremmer kicked long out of defence. They have been leaders and contributing to the backline’s current form which also consists of regulars Dyl Tobais, Simon Reid, Robbie Lamont, Jake Whitford, Luke Spinks and Alex Ford.

A superb display of what we’re capable of and as we take on Mazenod after the break, it will be important for all the boys to continue our form for when we take to Old Melbournians a couple of weeks after. Once again, a great win from the entire team.
