In clearly our biggest test thus far, U19s came up against the number one placed Ormond at EE Gunn Reserve after having a week off. In fairly sunny conditions, we started the game like we have started many games this year, in very fine style, staking our claim and surprising Ormond with a blistering first quarter.
They no doubt approached this match with the same mindset they had been using in their past matches against lower opposition teams. We took advantage of this fact and they were quick to learn they were facing us, a team (sitting currently in third place), and pushing for the second spot on the ladder. Adjusting to the narrow dimensions of the ground, we kicked long using the centre of the ground and hitting the chest of leading forwards McGlashan, Penberthy and Rowsthorn. Dom O’Keefe was also helpful in moving the ball through the corridor. Ormond led at the first break by 13 points and if it wasn’t for a couple of easy misses and minor errors late in the term we could well have been within a kick.
We came out fired up after the break showing we weren’t afraid to lay the opposition into the dirt and displayed some yet-to-be-seen tackling from some unlikely players. By applying physical pressure it sent a message that we were ‘fair dinkum’ and had come with the very intention to cause a huge upset over the competition leaders. Many of our tackles went unrewarded though. This allowed Ormond to run away with the ball as we were not quick enough to respond to the umpire’s decisions, which were consistent with not paying holding the ball. At this stage our defence had stood well with Tobias, Spinks and Reid working well together. Then within a period of about 15 minutes Ormond had run away to a 30 point lead before handy goals to Baker and Price allowed only a 19 point deficit at half time.
After half time Ormond gained momentum early by running through our midfield line and defence. But it was not enough to stop everyone from trying. The midfield never gave in, including Mark Nelson who had a respectable performance in the ruck. It had become evident that our contested marks were not sticking and this contributed to the cause of turnovers occurring throughout the entire game. Ford played another great game covering all areas of the ground, while Kremmer showed he is capable of holding down the position at full back in what was by far his best game of the season. Ormond scored 10 goals in the second half to our four and gave us a thrashing after we had started so well. It was a disappointing finish and it must be said not our best effort but it is a match we will not forget when we meet them next time
