CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS 8.5. 53 def by ST.BERNARDS 13.8. 86 Goals: Murphy 2, Schroth 2, Poulter, Cannell, Gross, Beveridge Best: Gross, Schroth, Fagan, Murphy, Wolkow, Bowes Going up against the top side of B Grade reserves was always going to be a tough ask for the Caulfield reserves. However the inclusions of Greg ‘Superboot’ Cannell and ‘Bustling’ Blair Hall gave the Fields some hope that their underperforming forward line would come to the party.
This was strengthened when ‘Superboot’ put the first major through for the Fields, although it probably won’t go down as his finest kick as it dribbled through from 35m out. The Fields were competitive across the ground with ‘Dynamite’ Wolkow controlling the centre bounces, and when Schrothy put his first through they were well in the game. Unfortunately St Bernard’s responded with 3 late goals in the quarter to give themselves a commanding 21 point lead. The second continued to see the Field’s backline hold up, lead ably by man mountain Chris Fagan, and despite the work of ‘Buster’ Beveridge and Ben Gross, the Snow Dogs started to get on top of the Fields. The contest was however still very willing, in spite of the scoreline and when Grossy zipped around most of the St Bernards backline to kick the Field’s only goal of the quarter, there was still some life in the game. A big indication of a reserves side is how well they play out a second half. The Fields set themselves to beating St Bernards in the last 2 quarters, unfortunately the Snow Dogs made this look unlikely with a 4 goal to 2 third term. Gross continued to rack up possessions and the goals the Field’s scored to ‘Buddy’ Poulter and ‘Buster’ Beveridge were well worked team scores. The 47 point final break margin was starting to look ominous. To their credit the Fields responded well and increased their harassment of the Snow Dogs all across the ground. This sustained pressure saw St Bernards uncharacteristically turn the ball over which gave both ‘Ed’ Murphy and Schroth great crumbing goals. Then when Murph finished a rampaging run, holding the ball one handed, with a goal from 40m out, Caulfield looked the better side on the park for the first time in the game. This win of the final term brought the final score back to the half time margin and certainly gave some confidence to the Fields going into next week’s clash with Old Melburnians. |
