Everyone was reminded that football is a winter sport this weekend, as the rain poured down and the mercury dropped. It was around 8C when the Caulfield Reserves ran out for the warm up, which was understandably a little longer in order to decrease the chances of hypothermia.

The usual number of changes saw Rob Picking return from injury and the devastating last minute loss of spiritual leader ‘Rocky’ Baker, who was hospitalised late on Friday. The conditions certainly made scoring early a priority and that is exactly what Old Camberwell did. They mauled the ball forward in waves and put 2 goals on the board before the Field’s had entered their own forward line. Picking and Schroth were working hard around the contest, while ‘Berry’ Kalaja was finding some space through the corridor, however the rest of the forward line was being caught behind their man, and overall Old Camberwell were more desperate across the ground. By quarter time the margin had stretched to 4 goals.

After some soul searching at the first break, the Fields came out a more committed unit in the second term. Schroth’s early goal was reward for his hard work, and the game had become a far more even contest, as the backline tightened up and the forwards got in front. It was certainly a day for the traditionalists and Radar O’Reilly was there in his gumboots and trench coat. The ground could also have passed for a potato paddock! Despite their increased effort, Old Camberwell answered the Field’s goal, to even out the quarter and maintain the 4 goal lead.

The third quarter saw the game open up a little more as both sides tired in the conditions. ‘Snake’ Dorman’s injection into the ruck gave the Field’s some increased hardness round the middle, while the loss of Scott and Gates left the ‘Fridge’ Fagan to marshal the defence. Some good clean work by ‘Ed’ Murphy set the skipper up for a goal, however the Field’s wasted a few other opportunities, while Camberwell managed to put 2 goals on to stretch the lead out to 29 points at the last change.

With the game effectively over the Fields put on their best quarter in the last as the lippy brats from the wrong side of the Monash Freeway inspired the lads with their witty repertoire. Schroth’s early goal got the ball rolling, followed by the skipper’s second and when Josh McMahon slotted another, the momentum was all with Caulfield. However Old Camberwell responded and then a late goal to Kalaja brought the margin back to 24 points. It was another bleak day for the reserves with simply not enough contributors, in a game that was very winnable.
