MARCELLIN 19.9. 123 def CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS 4.9. 33 Goal Kickers: N. Edwards 2, B. Gross, C. Gates Best Players: C. Gates, G. Poulter, B. Gross, L. Matias, W. Bowes, S. Garrood A week is a long time in football and so it was for the Caulfield Grammarians Reserves. After a rousing victory over Old Haileybury, Caulfield went into the Marcellin clash with some confidence. Even with some late withdrawals, the final side of 19 players didn’t lack ability or condition. However Marcellin were raring to register their first win of the season and slammed on 2 quick goals before the Fields knew what hit them. Some sustained forward pressure resulted in 5 scoring shots for the quarter, unfortunately all of them were only minor scores. A 16 point quarter time lead to the Eagles could have been far greater
The second quarter was by far the worst the Field’s reserves have dished up this year. Words like insipid spring to mind, however Marcellin deserve the credit for putting them to the sword when they had the opportunity. The Eagles were too often first to the football and moved the ball with some genuine pace once they won possession. The Caulfield defenders were put under an immense amount of pressure by the Marcellin midfield dominance, and Gates, Matias and Garood did a sterling job under trying conditions.
Some soul searching was obviously needed at the main break, and Caulfield responded with some centre clearances and the first 2 goals of the game. A deft handball amongst traffic by Tim Messer helped set up the first goal to ‘Buddy’ Poulter, before some Gross magic gave the Fields some life. However the Eagles responded by piling on the next 7 goals, although to Caulfield’s credit they certainly put up more of a fight than in the previous term.
With a twang of the Tim Messer hamstring Caulfield was reduced to 18 men, but continued to fight out the last quarter to the end. Nick Edwards on one leg managed to snag two majors, and the ‘Wiz’ Gross nearly finished the play of the day by clearing the ball across half back, before getting it back across half forward and kicking for goal on the run. Unfortunately he missed and the Fields went on to lose by 90 points.
Not too many positives for the Fields to take out of this week, although Cheyne Gates deserves special mention for battling hard all day, except that there is still next week and the chance to redeem themselves against Beaumaris. A big triple header against the Sharks should hopefully see a more determined effort from the lads.
