The Caulfield Grammarians Under 19s achieved a momentous victory for the club on the weekend against school rivals Old Brighton at home. The 97 point defeat was a truly hard-fought, scintillating performance that will go very far to helping Caulfield continue their campaign for a top two position on the ladder, with still a number of challenging games left in the season. The eleventh win for the season unfortunately came at a cost of a couple of sore, injured bodies.
The match was staged in front of one of the biggest crowds this level of footy has seen in recent times with plenty more passion and enthusiasm, and nearly more people, than a Kangaroos versus St Kilda match at the Gold Coast! Caulfield certainly exerted their strength and hardness at the footy on Saturday afternoon with a star-studded line-up, as made mention of during the week. A high level of participation at the pre-match Luncheon meant family, friends and many club players including Senior players, who had a bye, flocked out to Glenhuntly Oval. Even the horses at the Caulfield racetrack mid-race were trying to peep over the fence to see the talent that was on display in the Caulfield Grammarians line-up. The team welcomed back Clay Williams, James Foote and Justin Kremmer from injury and with the exception of one or two players, who are still away on holiday trips, the team was at full-strength.
One in particular player, Cal Sinclair was inspirational as he took control of the game after half time when the match was slightly in our favour. Caulfield had moved out to a 22-point lead by the main break, when ‘The Chief’ kicked a lazy seven goals in the third quarter helping Caulfield stretch out to a comfortable 16-goal lead. Before the fire extinguisher got out to him (when he was on fire!) a nasty head crash left him bruised, bedazzled and with memory loss of the wonderful position he’d just put the team in. The run was too strong for Old Brighton early in the game who failed numerously when trying to get the ball past our line of defence. The backline, lead well by Dylan Tobias and Luke Spinks, had worked hard all day to concede just two goals until early in the fourth quarter and were well-spirited each time they rushed a point for the opposition. This of course giving Caulfield a chance to move the ball out of Old Brighton’s forward line from the goal square with the booming, long right-foot kicks by Ben Price. Cam Penberthy was great with his gather and disposal, while every player across the centre was involved throughout the game. The ball seemingly flowed with ease through the middle of the ground at times, giving the forwards countless opportunities to mark inside the forward fifty. The win was sensational and a terrific team effort. A couple of large mistakes still mean there is room for improvement as by our own measures, there were even more chances to convert more goals.
Dave Allanson and Tim Baker (who after a couple of errors early turned his game around in the second quarter) continued their current great form for the team. The midfield all came on strongly with Darcy Daly a stand-out player along with Cam Penberthy and Andrew Simmons’ run. It was a really strong turnaround from Caulfield after having a very close battle with Old Brighton earlier in the year. This encounter will ensure nothing more than hopefully a bit more respect for our list by the competition. It also will present more headaches for the coach come finals time as the amount of depth is unbelievable in this Under 19s group. Thanks to a couple of guys who chose to play full games in the Club 18. It was much appreciated and a gesture that would not in any way harm your chances of selection. Players must attend training if they think they are a fair chance for selection, getting the numbers up are important as it sets the example to the rest of the club. Good luck with your recovery Chief. Well done Fields!
