Goal kickers – Carboni 6, Royle 2, Slevison 2, A Sinclair, D Daly, T Siundberg Better player – M Sundberg, Carboni, T Sundberg, Hammond, Meredith, Hyland With limited vision from the hopeless time keeper’s position, looking squarely into the sun and at one extreme of the park, I offer a very limited report! I along with others felt there would be a real strong effort against SKOBS having won the earlier encounter in the season and knowing that their need for points was not as great as ours.
How disappointing to be blown away in the first quarter with inept, undisciplined and uncharacteristically weak football! I could not fathom our avenue to goal that seemed to always encapsulate long delivery at no better than 45 degrees; not exactly my idea of delivery to “the fat side”. We simply did not go direct enough and we were certainly not hard enough on more than one occasion. St Kevin’s obviously picked up on this and grabbed the initiative with very clean, direct football. No wonder the coaching staff were unhappy at the first break. 11 scoring shots to our 4 was luckily not worse than it could have been (2.2 to 4.7). The second quarter was a shocker and SKOBS kicked 9 for the term. We did manage 5 with Carbs worrying the hell out of the opposition who would have been expecting his good mate Slev to do the majority of the scoring! Not much changed after half time and it was a 7 goal deficit at the last break (11.7 to 18.9). Could we hold them and make up some leeway? No! They kicked another 6 while we kicked 3 and it was 10 goals at the final siren. Carb’s with a thigh problem, which meant no midfield for him, kicked 6 in a good display. We have some work to do!! If there was one thing really noticeable it was we did not play for one another. That characteristic is always obvious for good teams. It does not mean that our guys didn’t try; they simply didn’t do enough to support one another. They couldn’t find the extra gear. They couldn’t rouse themselves to greater heights. It is no good waiting for what we consider to be winnable games at home in the run home. If we don’t play more as a team we won’t win any!! It needs to start next game at the Snake Pit. If we make the right statement at St Bernards, all is not lost. If we don’t, we will struggle to beat anyone on the way home. Sorry to disappoint those ‘dyed in the wool’ followers but facts are facts! Let’s see what happens against a strong side like St Bernards, just down from A Section, very jealous of their good reputation and keen to bounce back to the top. This Saturday will tell the tale, not necessarily the following 5 games! Geoff Reilley |
