Goal kickers – Slevison 6, Royle, C Sinclair and Carboni 1 each. Better players – Slevison, Hyland, Meredith, C May, Evans, Winter With great expectations we hosted Marcellin at our home ground fully expecting to repeat last season’s strong performance at Glenhuntly against Marcellin. It was a poor start in the first quarter when numerous set shots were missed and we paid the price on the scoreboard as Marcellin’s skills ensured they made the most of their chances. 1.7 to 5.4 was very disappointing, the only goal coming from Cody Royle.
The second quarter was tight and scrambly for the first five minutes and Marcellin scored the first major. We needed to get it in to the forwards a lot quicker and after a fairly even term, Marcellin held a solid lead at half time. 2.8 to 7.7 was not an insurmountable deficit. We started the third quarter more confidently and Andy Slevison’s two early goals were punctuated by one major to Marcellin. Our lads were having a real go but there was too much fumbling at critical times. Suddenly our errors by both hand and foot were severely punished by Marcellin who kicked the next 5 goals to basically wrap up the game. Only a late goal from Cal Sinclair gave some hope. 5.12 to 13.14 – 8 goals certainly looked too much to make up. In summary, we outscored Marcellin in the final quarter, 4.1 to 1.4 but had performed very disappointingly in a critical match. Andy Slevison’s 6 goals was a solo effort. The run home was going to be very difficult but maybe the challenge would see the best of our boys. Geoff Reilley |
